A bite-size review of Obsidian's latest isometric marvel.
The sequel to Pillars of Eternity will once again have you taking on the role of ‘the watcher of Caed Nua’ a being with the ability to read souls and peer into past lives, because in this world reincarnation is a hard fact. This time around you are tasked with tracking down the dead god Eothas, who, as it turns out, is not dead but is definitely still a god.
Fortunately, you won't have to tackle this behemoth alone as you have seven fully voiced companions along for the ride, including returning favourites: Edér, Aloth and Pallegina along with the fantastic voice acting of Matthew Mercer. Players of Pillars one will find the top-down turned based combat has been drastically improved along with the levelling and character creation system now allowing the option to multi-class.
Along with this comes dozens of side quests, four distinct factions and an open world experience that will have become a captain of your own ship, exploring the open ocean of the Deadfire archipelago, fending off pirate attacks and of course, fighting the occasional dragon.
Fans of isometric RPG’s will find this (along with its predecessor) a must have and for those of you who aren't, Pillars of Eternity Two: Deadfire is an excellent introduction to the genre, as long as you don’t mind losing 60 plus hours to a truly engrossing story.
